Good Fountain
The pilgrimage of Bonne-Fontaine, a true haven of peace, is very famous in Alsace-Lorraine.
In 1714, soldiers of the Phalsbourg garrison are victims of a serious epidemic of bacillary dysentery.
Looking for pure water that is not tainted with harmful bacteria, they discover, only 2km from the city, a statuette of the Virgin in the hollow of an oak tree and, at its feet, a spring of living water.
Amazed by their discovery, and relieved in their bodies, the soldiers spread the news of their miraculous healing around them and, very quickly, many pilgrims converged on this valley to drink from this beneficial spring.
If the soldiers were the first pilgrims, very quickly, others followed and many healings could be noted.
It is in 1741 that the Marian sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonne-Fontaine is officially dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on September 8th.
Since then, many enlargements have been carried out and worship is regularly organized there.
This fountain symbolizes the life that springs from the ground, the Eucharist offered by Christ for eternal life in the world.
The Franciscans celebrated 100 years of presence at the service of this Marian pilgrimage site of the diocese of Metz on May 1st, 2008.
